Abstract:

Background & Objective : Currently, efforts are underway to seek new and effective antimicrobial agents, and marine resources are potent candidates for this aim. The following study was conducted to investigate the efficacy of water-soluble and acid-soluble chitosan against some pathogenic organisms.   Materials & Method s: Inhibition zone of different concentrations (5, 7.5, and 10 mg/ml) of acid- soluble and water-soluble chitosan were examined for in vitro antibacterial activity against 4 kinds of hospital bacteria and penicillium sp. Results were compared with 4 standard antibiotics: streptomycin, gentamicin, tetracycline, and erythromycin. Furthermore, minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum lethal concentration were determined.   Results: Inhibition activity of acid-soluble chitosan (10%) showed the best result (p value < 0.05), whereas water-soluble chitosan exhibited the least antibacterial effects (p value < 0.05). Chitosan demonstrated maximum effect on V. cholera cerotype ogava , and the least effect was seen on E. coli (p value < 0.05). Acid-soluble chitosan had a more potent effect than the standard antibiotics. Also, acid-soluble chitosan (10%) and water-soluble chitosan showed maximum inhibitory effects on penicillium sp.   Conclusion: Chitosan showed maximum antibacterial effect against S. aureus, V. cholerae cerotype ogava, and water-soluble chitosan demonstrated good antifungal effects, revealing a statistically significant difference with common antibacterial and antifungal medicines.

The antimicrobial of chitin and chitosan extracted from shrimp shell (Palameon elegans)

Palaemon elegans are distributed over a wide coastline of ocean and sea waters. distilled form (chitosan) is a natural polymer with antimicrobial properties that is naturally present in the exoskeleton of crustaceans, including shrimp. Chitin and chitosan are widely used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, agricultural, biomedical, food preparation and storage industries. 977 pieces of P. elegans ...

Molecular characterization of a crustin-like, putative antimicrobial peptide, Fi-crustin, from the Indian white shrimp, Fenneropenaeus indicus.

Antimicrobial peptides are important innate immune defense, especially in those animals which lack adaptive immunity [1e8]. Due to their small size, amphipathic structure and cationic character they can rapidly diffuse to the point of infection [9], a mechanism that presumably makes it easier to circumvent microbial resistance against the peptides [10]. Besides providing an immediate and broad-...

Extraction and Characterization of Water Soluble Chitosan from Parapeneopsis Stylifera Shrimp Shell Waste and Its Antibacterial Activity

Preparation and characterization of water soluble chitosan was examined for their antibacterial activity from P. stylifera. The yield of crude chitosan and water soluble chitosan was 54.3 % and 87.8%. The FT-IR spectrum of chitin, chitosan and water soluble chitosan also determined and characterization was done and compared with standards. Compare to other bacterial strains S.auerus (18.3mm) ha...

Extraction of chitosan and its oligomers from shrimp shell waste, their characterization and antimicrobial effect

AIM The present study was performed to utilize the shrimp shell waste for chitin and chitosan production, characterization by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) technique and to evaluate the antimicrobial effects of chitosan oligomers produced by depolymerization of chitosan by nitrous acid. MATERIALS AND METHODS Chitosan was extracted from the shrimp shell waste by the chemical method and ch...

Biochemical Composition of Shell and Flesh of the Indian White Shrimp Penaeus indicus

Shrimps are an extremely good source of protein, yet are very low in fat and calories, making them a very healthy choice of food. The present was investigated the variation between the proximate and mineral compositions of the shell and flesh of Penaeus indicus. Shrimps were collected from the Vellar estuarine environment Southeast coast of India. The results of proximate composition shows that...
